Call for sessions

The CAA2020 call for sessions is now open.  You are invited to submit a proposal to organise a session on any aspect of computer applications or quantitative methods in archaeology, choosing from one of the following formats:

  1. Standard – with a series of 20-minute papers addressing a theme presented in advance by the organisers;
  2. Round Table – with a pre-conference position paper published by the organisers, followed by an invitation for researchers to submit a response in advance or to participate in open-forum discussion at the session;
  3. Other – with the format decided by the organisers, exploring innovative and creative ways for participants to engage with the session.

Further guidance for each format can be found below and the CAA2020 call for sessions will stay open until 18th 31st July 2019.  Sessions proposals from Students and Early Career Researchers are actively encouraged.

The official language of the conference is English.  All session proposals should be submitted in English.  You will be required to endorse the CAA ethics statement as part of your submission (https://caa-international.org/about/ethics-policy/).

You may contribute to more than one session abstract, but you may only be first author for one and you must be willing to be involved in the development and delivery of all sessions that are accepted.  Session organisers will be expected to: promote their session; encourage submission of abstracts; coordinate the review of submitted abstracts; chair the session at the conference; encourage post-conference publication of papers.

The CAA Scientific Committee may propose splitting or merging sessions as part of the review process depending upon the number of submissions.

Session proposals (up to 1000 words plus references) should be broad enough to reach all interested researchers, regardless of affiliation or background.  Any queries related to the CAA2020 call for sessions should be directed to caa2020@arch.ox.ac.uk.

Standard Session

Standard sessions will comprise a series of 20-minute papers addressing a particular theme.  Depending on your theme, the proposal for your session could include:

  • background information on the theme and a brief summary of past developments;
  • a snapshot of current research in the field and the directions in which it is heading;
  • the importance and potential contributions of research in the field;
  • examples of prospective content for papers;
  • likely audiences for your proposed session.

Your proposal should contain sufficient information to allow the CAA Scientific Committee to evaluate the scientific content of your session.

Round Table

Round tables will engage participants in discussion around a specific topic or issue, moderated by the session organiser(s).  The proposal for your round table could take the form of either a position statement that will form the basis of the discussion OR an extended abstract that could include:

  • background information on the theme/issue and a brief summary past developments;
  • a snapshot of current research in the field and the directions in which it is heading;
  • the importance and potential contributions of research in the field;
  • likely audiences, prospective participants and desirable perspectives;
  • a summary of the structure of the round table and discussion format.

Your proposal should contain sufficient information to allow the CAA Scientific Committee to evaluate the scientific content of your session.

Round table proposals should specify whether discussants are expected to produce slides or a statement to set out their position, and, if so, should include guidance on the limits for the number of slides and the length of the statement.

Round table organisers will be expected to nominate participants by the deadline for the Call for Papers.  Participants who are nominated by the round table organisers will not need to submit abstracts as part of the Call for Papers.

Other Session

For the last few years the CAA Scientific Committee has actively encouraged session formats which push the boundaries of traditional paper sessions or round tables, including lightning talks, hackathons and opportunities to share projects and ideas informally.  Proposals for other formats of session should include:

  • a summary of the theme/issue addressed by the session;
  • a description of the proposed format for the session;
  • the importance and potential contributions of research in the field;
  • likely audiences for your proposed session;
  • an overview of the expected outcome of the session.

Your proposal should contain sufficient information to allow the CAA Scientific Committee to evaluate the scientific content of your session.

Lightning talks or similar contributions are excluded from the limit of one paper per first named author, i.e. a participant can submit an abstract for both a lightning talk and a 20-minute paper.  Participants in other session formats will still have the opportunity to submit a paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings.
